| Why do Christians oppose legalized abortion? |
|
First, it would be helpful to define just exactly what abortion is.
Abortion is the intentional termination of a pregnancy by the painful killing of an innocent human being. Abortion advocates who legislate under the banner of "pro choice" are actually disguising the real issue of murder as the woman's right to choose. In reality, this is a human being in the mother's womb who has been made in God's image, and the issue involves life or death. ( Genesis 1:26-27; 9:6 )
IS ABORTION PAINFUL? The means by which abortion is performed are painful involving suffocation , poisoning , cutting , decapitation , suction , piercing with brain extraction , dismembering & crushing . These procedures have been used on live babies who may or may not have been anesthetized. Sometimes, while still alive, the organs are removed and sold for fetal tissue experimentation which is an illegal practice.
IS ABORTION MURDER? It is now recognized that once the male sperm (23 chromosomes) and the female ovum (23 chromosomes) unite, the human zygote (with 46 chromosomes containing a unique genetic code) is formed, fulfilling the four criteria necessary to establish the existence of biological life (ability to react to stimuli, development, metabolism, and cell reproduction). In an abortion, the killing of the human zygote is purposefully performed. A human life has been terminated. To a Christian, this killing of an innocent person with forethought is murder and wrong. Exodus 20:13
IS IT HUMAN? Furthermore, from the moment of conception, the developing zygote quickly becomes an embryo. This embryo may not have a fully developed personality; however, it does have complete person-hood. Full humanness now begins at conception.
French geneticist Jerome L. LeJeune, while testifying before a Senate Subcommittee, asserted: "To accept the fact that after fertilization has taken place a new human has come into being is no longer a matter of taste or opinion. The human nature of the human being from conception to old age is not a metaphysical contention, it is plain experimental evidence." When Does Life Begin?
"From this point (conception) until death, no new genetic information is needed to make the unborn entity a unique individual human. " Francis J. Beckwith in Is the Unborn Human less than Human? .
"Consciousness nor sentience nor the ability to reflect the image of God are determinants of what constitutes a person. Those are all functions that are a result of being a person, not the determinants of it. Human beings function in the way we do because we are things of a certain sort—human persons created in God’s image with dignity, moral status and rights to life" Scott B. Rae, PhD Fellow of the Center for Bioethics and Human Dignity
"Many argue that it is not a human until it is 'out of the uterus,' and in the stem-cell debate many argue that it is not a human until it is 'in the uterus.' These arguments based on the individual's location are feeble attempts to deny the basic fact understood and accepted by scientists for many generations: human-hood begins with the union of 23 chromosomes from the ovum with 23 chromosomes from the sperm." Robert D. Orr, director of Ethics, University of Vermont & C. Christopher Hook of the Mayo Clinic as published in Yale Journal of Health, Policy, Law and Ethics
WHAT ABOUT ABORTION FOR RAPE, INCEST, OR RISK TO MOTHER'S LIFE? Finally, the most difficult question to answer is in the case of saving the mother's life if at risk during the pregnancy. But this situation arises in less than . 1% of all abortions performed today. In addition, less than 5% of all abortions performed are a result of incest or rape. Advocating for abortion just because of these cases would be like removing all speed limits just because you may have to exceed the speed limit one day while driving to the hospital to see a dying parent. Of the 2 million unborn babies who die ANNUALLY in the United States alone, 1.9 million would be saved even if we had legislation that allowed for exceptions in this small percentage of cases .
Thankfully, God has provided hope for those who have experienced the emotional and physical scars of abortion. In fact, the sin of abortion is just as forgivable as any other sin through the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ. Romans 8:1 , Colossians 1:14 . Those who are in Christ can also look forward to the glorious reuniting of their unborn baby in the Heavenly Kingdom to come for all of eternity.
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. Psalm 139:13-16
